What is "Know Your Neighbours"?

"Know Your Neighbours" is a grass-roots community group in Seal, near Sevenoaks in Kent. The group is made up of anyone in the village who wants to get involved - individuals, clubs and societies, businesses, church and schools, parish council,and many others.
We organise local events through the year - fetes, street parties, Christmas events etc. - and we hold social gatherings, just so that people can get to "know their neighbours". There's no "committee" - anyone who turns up for meetings is welcome to help in any way they are able.

KYN update Nov 21

 CHRISTMAS BAZAAR THIS SUNDAY!!

There will be a Christmas Bazaar in Seal Village Hall on Sunday November 21st from 10.30am-3pm. The stalls taking part, look quite amazing, and will certainly give us the opportunity to find a wide range of unique Christmas gifts. Seal Church will be running a tombola and refreshments. We would like to thank Annie Fish for organising this event.
 

ADVENT WINDOWS.
Last year, saw our first and very successful Advent Window Trail which was organised by Barbara Martin. This year, we hope to have another 23 households, to decorate a window in their house throughout December. Between 1st and 23rd December, each day, a newly added decorated window will be added to the trail, ending with the Christmas Nativity Stable in Seal Church. So, by Christmas Eve, there are 24 beautiful windows and scenes to admire. This is a lovely activity for all, to follow the trial and admire the scenes.

SEAL HISTORY WALK GUIDE BOOKS
Are you looking for a stocking filler for £5? Following the sell out of our first run,  we have had a re-print of our very popular Historical walk guide books, by David Williams. They are available now from Deniz's coffee shop, or Highland Printers in Church Farm (weekday mornings only). If you want to order copies and cannot get to either of these places, please respond to this email, and we will get them to you.

SEAL VILLAGE HALL
The AGM took place on Wednesday evening of this week, but so far, no new Chairperson has been appointed. If you might be interested in this role, please contact Alan Davies jandddavies@hotmail.co.uk
This could be a really interesting role, especially as times change, and people find themselves with more time to spend in their own communities. 

NEWS FROM SEAL PARISH COUNCIL
On our website we are proposing to install 2 Public EV Charging Stations for Seal Recreation Car Park, a survey can be downloaded from our website to complete, we are interested in people's views and would be grateful for people to fill in the survey.  You can take a picture on your phone and send it via email or alternatively you can pick up a survey from the village shops who have paper copies there.

SEAL PARISH COUNCIL WILDFLOWER PROJECT
Following on from our wildflower talk from the Kent Wildlife Trust's WILD ABOUT GARDENS team, are running a series of zoom sessions this winter on WILDLIFE FRIENDLY GARDEN, This is a great way of encouraging wildflowers and pollinators to your garden, This, is combination with our wildflower verges project, will also help create joined up 'pathways' for bees, butterflies and other key pollinators in our parish.
Details of the events can be seen on the Parish Council website, but the zoom sessions cost £5 a session, and are as follows:-
Tuesday 30th November - 7.30-9pm Pollinator Friendly Gardening
Thursday 13th January - 7.30-9pm Nature Friendly Gardening for Beginners.
Wednesday January 26th 10,30am- midday - Managing pests and diseases in a Nature Friendly Way
Saturday Feb 5th 3pm-5pm - Building and Maintaining a Wildlife Pond
Monday March 7th 7.30-9pm - Wilder Lawns
Sat March 26th 11-12.30 - Using weeds and wildflowers in a garden to attract bees, butterflies and moths.

LAVENDER FIELDS CARE HOME
Unfortunately, the Christmas Fair due to take place on November 27th, is another victim of events, and has to be cancelled. This is due, partly to Covid restrictions, but the team look forward to a great fair in the summer.

We are planning to call a Zoom meeting sometime in December, for anybody who is interested in plans for the ROYAL CELEBRATION next year, and plans for the choice and care of our village Covid memorial tree. We will advise as soon as a day is set, but please let me know if you would be interested in 'attending' this virtual meeting.

Our Seal Over 60’s Group meets every second Saturday of each month from 2.30-4pm. Some of those attending this group, are dependent on volunteer drivers to transport them to and from the Village Hall. HELPERS FOR SAT NOVEMBER 27th FOR PUTTING UP CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Please respond to me via this email, if you would be able to spend an hour or two on the morning of 27th, to maybe bring a ladder and assist with putting up our lights. We will also be looking for volunteers to take them down for storage on Sat January 8th. This sounds like a chore, but is actually great fun, and you'll meet lots of great people too. We use bacon sandwiches, or similar, as a bribe!

SEAL CHURCH WREATH MAKING WORKSHOPS - UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO SUPPLY ISSUES, THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED FOR THIS YEAR.


VILLAGE CHRISTMAS TREE
This will be erected at the junction of Church Street and the  High Street on the morning of November 26th, so it will be in situ for the lights going up the following day. There will be the opportunity to collect some stars, for you to take and write a message on for those you will miss this Christmas. These will be available to collect from the church porch, and Deniz's coffee shop.

FAMILY CHRISTMAS PARTY VILLAGE HALL 3-4.30pm SATURDAY DECEMBER 4th.
We have booked Rob Pound again, a great local entertainer, for the children (and those grown up children), who was so popular in 2019. PLEASE NOTE< THERE WILL BE A DIFFERENCE THIS YEAR, AS WE HAVE DECIDED THERE SHOULD BE NO FOOD TO SHARE, AND AS WE ARE ONLY TALKING 90MINUTES, WE FEEL WE SHOULD SKIP THE FOOD ALTOGETHER. I'm sure you will all understand the reasoning behind this - there is a rising number of Covid cases in the area again, and we would hate to be responsible for your homes being Covid hosts at Christmas time! We will provide squash for your children, and tea and coffee for adults, served in the safest way possible.
. We will round up with carol singing around the village Christmas tree, as always. PLEASE NOTE - WE WILL HAVE TO USE A BOOKING SYSTEM THIS YEAR FOR OBVIOUS REASONS! I will send a link to book in the next few days. We are keen to ensure our local families, those who live Children and grandchildren), work (school) or play (Beavers, cubs, scouts, other village groups) in Seal, have priority in this booking system, so we are not entirely sure how to go about this right now. As soon as a decision has been made, you will be informed.

Monday afternoons between 2pm and 3.30 in Deniz's on the High Street. Buy a cup of tea or coffee and join us on the Talking Village table, for a chat and to make new friends, or catch up with old ones!

Saturdays - First Saturday of each month in Seal Library from 10am-11am. Join us for a coffee whilst out browsing for your library books.
At both these venues, there will always be two hosts to welcome you, and we look forward to meeting with you and getting to know each other better.

FRIDAY GROUP
Meets each Friday morning in the Church Hall between 10.30 and midday. Coffee, chat, by all means, bring your crafting with you but mostly, enjoy the company.

KYN update Nov 12

 Welcome to this week's Know Your Neighbours update. 

We would like to thank all those who came along last Saturday - both representatives of organisations, and local residents alike! You all certainly made the morning worthwhile, and it was great to welcome so many new neighbours to our village! Our aim is to repeat this now, every 3 months, to keep on top of new people moving in to Seal.


The survey regarding Christmas lighting, showed, without a doubt, the priority would be to light our village tree with new lights for 2021. 

We were hoping to get more icicle lights up the higher end of the High Street this year, but cost due to supply issues, appear to be affecting this idea negatively, so we may have to wait another year, or expand very slowly. 

Several ideas came out of the meeting for different new groups in the village. One - and this has come up before - is the idea of having a group for people who enjoy art - painting, drawing or any other media - not as a learning group necessarily, but as a motivational group. Many people like to dabble, but need others to motivate them to Η΅et the paints out´. If you feel this is you, please contact us on this email address, and we will see if this is something that can be facilitated in the new year.


We have been invited by the Allotments Society, to hold occasional coffee mornings (when the weather is good), on the social area of the allotment site. This is a generous and thoughtful offer, which we will pick up on in 2022.


Another idea, which has been raised before, is a walking group - possibly health walks to get started,so that they are open to many.


Other one off ideas include, music evenings in one of the halls, barn dances, sports fun days on the rec, and small fetes on the rec.


Finally, which we will be pursuing in the new year, is to hold occasional talks relating to first aid, and defibrillator training.

SEAL LIBRARY 10.15-12.15 - DAVID WILLIAMS WILL BE IN THE LIBRARY TO EXPLORE THE ARCHIVES. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS RELATING TO THE HISTORY OF SEAL, DAVID WILL HAVE THE ARCHIVES OPEN AND THERE WILL BE A NEW HISTORY DISPLAY TO SEE.! PLEASE COME WITH YOUR QUESTIONING BRAIN ON!

LAVENDER FIELDS CARE HOME

will be holding a Christmas Fair on Saturday 27th November from 2-4 pm.. THIS WILL BE AN OUTDOOR EVENT DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS. If you have a gazebo you could lend to Lavender Fields for this event, they would be extremely grateful. They will take great care of it and can arrange collection and dropping back if necessary.

In the good old days (Pre-Covid), we had a thriving group of volunteers at Lavender Fiealds, who would befriend, play board games, help with activities, etc. Like most activities and organisations, this group needs a little re-boot.If there is anybody who could spend some time to assist on 27th, with setting up, holding a stall, clearing away, etc, please contact Diane of the Activities Team, on 01732 755630.

THERE IS ALSO SOME AVAILABILITY FOR PRIVATE STALL HOLDERS TO SELL THEIR WARES AND MAKE A DONATION TO L.F. Again, please contact Diane.

Friday Group held a coffee morning this morning, in aid of Hospice in the Weald. It was a great, friendly event, and raised just over £292.

KYN update Nov 5 2021

 Welcome to this week's Know Your Neighbours update. Well, it has certainly been a week for the centre of the village hasn it! Hopefully, soon it will all be back to normal, and we can stop having to shout above the noise - thatΕ› not the noise of the work by the way, but that of those constant horn blowers out there, who clearly believe that leaving your fist on a car hooter for 45 seconds, will improve the flow of traffic! Rant over - Grumpy old woman - back in your box!

Between 1st and 23rd December, each day, a newlt added decorated window will be added to the trail, ending with the Christmas Nativity Stable in Seal Church. So, by Christmas Eve, there are 24 beauiful windows and scenes to admire. This is a lovely activity for all, to follow the trial and admire the scenes.

VILLAGE CHRISTMAS TREE

This will be erected at the junction of Church Street and the  High Street on the morning of November 26th, so it will be in situ for the lights going up the following day. There will be the opportunity to collect some stars, for you to take and write a message on for those you will miss this Christmas. There will be more details of where to collect these and how we might come together to reflect at some point.

We have booked Rob Pound again, a great local entertainer, for the children (and the not so young), who was so popular in 2019. Please bring a plate of food to share, and we will provide drinks. KYN update Oct 29

 KYN MEETING

VILLAGE HALL  ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 6th between 10.45am and Midday
Please join us for a cuppa, to chat about what goes on now in our village, and what you’d like to see in the future, along with how we might achieve this?  Everybody is welcome! Hopefully, we will have representatives, or at least information, of all the organisations and activities which already take place in our village.There will be a short survey to see how you would like to see our Christmas lights improved this year, (to match our budget of course).

LAVENDER FIELDS CARE HOME
will be holding a Christmas Fair later in November. There may be some availability for outside stalls. I am waiting for further information, if you contact me, I can forward your details, should you wish to sell your wares at this event.

SEAL VILLAGE HALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
are soon to be holding their AGM. They will be looking to elect a new Chairman at this event, so if you, or somebody you know, might be interested in this role, do give it some thought. I will give you further news as soon as a date has been set.

THE GOOD LIFE COMES TO SEAL
If you have any windfall apples you don't need, please think of the animals at Seal School Community Farm. If you have some and are unable to transport them, please respond to this email, and I will arrange collection and delivery.
Thank you to all the amazing staff at Seal, who have led guided tours around the farm throughout the half term holiday, and over weekends and summer holidays too! An experience enjoyed by many and to be enjoyed by many more in the future!

This year's Underriver village fireworks will take place on TONIGHT at The White Rock - to include a Halloween Fancy Dress competition and pumpkin cutting competition, followed by the fireworks. Hot dogs and burgers available from 7pm.
ENTRY TO THIS EVENT IS FREE BUT THERE WILL BE A COLLECTION DURING THE EVENING. This will go towards the funds for the Underriver Village Platinum Jubilee Celebration for 2022 and this year's British Legion Poppy Appeal.

HELPERS FOR SAT NOVEMBER 27th FOR PUTTING UP CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Please respond to me via this email, if you would be able to spend an hour or two on the morning of 27th, to maybe bring a ladder and assist with putting up our lights. We will also be looking for volunteers to take them down for storage on Sat January 8th. This sounds like a chore, but is actually great fun, and you'll meet lots of great people too. We use bacon sandwiches, or similar, as a bribe!

KYN update Oct 16

Welcome to this week's Know Your Neighbours update. Apologies for being a bit behind this week. I got ahead of myself earlier in the week, and that is always a recipe for disaster! Anyway, we're off now and ready to go. For now, as I know we are still adding new people to this list, I am keeping the list of regular activities below. I will not do this as a rule, but will keep them on a document to share as and when people need it. So, for now, I apologise for the lengthy emails, but they will get much shorter soon.

SCARECROWS DISPLAY


We would like to thank all those who contributed to the display of scarecrows this year, despite there being no competition as such. So many people comment on the pleasure they bring as they pass by our creations. Hopefully, we will have a more organised event again in 2022. Some have also asked what is the reason for the scarecrows? Back in 2014, it was decided to get as many scarecrows displayed throughout the village, to lead up to our Harvest Festival. So, in our 8th year, we weren't to be totally put off by the effects of the pandemic, although everybody was beginning to feel somewhat jaded from the effects of the past 18 months. We decided to go ahead in a very low key manner, and it was great to see some new models, new creators and some in different locations. They were quite splendid, and very much appreciated. Hopefully, they will be joined by many more 'friends ' next year.

Seriously, this is always a fun morning, and a great opportunity to meet neighbours while doing a great job of cheering our village. We are hoping to stretch a little further up the High Street this year, so if we could get some volunteers from High Street residents,between Park Lane and East Point and between Church Street and the old Copper Kettle, that would be great!

Know Your Neighbours newsletter : Oct 8

 I hope you are all enjoyed that Indian summer we had been promised. It happened on Wednesday, for those who may have missed it! It was lovely to bask in some late summer/early autumn sunshine though wasn't it!


You will all be aware of the roadworks in the village this week. Unfortunately, there was no warning for this, and it took many by surprise. So, we are hoping that you will be able to do a little pre-planning, as we have been advised that there will, in fact be more planned works in the High Street, which are due to start on November 1st, meaning there will be three way traffic lights at the junction of Church Street, and both sides of the High Street. The utilities concerned are collaborating on these works, and we would like to thank Cazz Lang for the heads up on this news.

SCARECROWS DISPLAY FROM MID SEPTEMBER TO MID OCTOBER.
Please join in with our Scarecrow Festival this year. There is no competition this year - just a bit of fun! Plan, design and display your scarecrow outside your home, or another agreed space in the village. Please contact me if you are stuck for ideas of where to display. Then - email me the address of where your scarecrow will be residing and his or her name. That way, I can compile a complete list so that people can walk and hunt the scarecrows!

There will be a family party to celebrate the turning on of our village Christmas lights, on Saturday December 4th from 3pm with lights on at 4.30pm. More details to follow.

BUT BEFORE THE PARTY…….We will need the usual help to get our lights up please! If you can help on Saturday November 27th, between 9am and midday, please let me know by responding to this email. Hopefully, we will be able to get these up in record time this year! Obviously, the more help, the quicker we will be, and there is always the incentive of a good coffee and a bacon sandwich to ‘reel you all in’. Seriously, this is always a fun morning, and a great opportunity to meet neighbours while doing a great job of cheering our village. We are hoping to stretch a little further up the High Street this year, so if we could get some volunteers from High Street residents,between Park Lane and East Point and between Church Street and the old Copper Kettle, that would be great!

TALKING VILLAGE
Monday afternoons between 2pm and 3.30 in Deniz's on the High Street. But a cup of tea or coffee and join us on the Talking Village table, for a chat and to make new friends, or catch up with old ones!

Saturdays - First Saturday of each month in Seal Library from 10am-11am. Join us for a coffee whilst out browsing for your library books.
At both these venues, there will always be two hosts to welcome you, and we look forward to meeting with you and getting to know each other better.


FRIDAY GROUP
Meets each Friday morning in the Church Hall between 10am and midday. Coffee, chat, by all means, bring your crafting with you but mostly, enjoy the company.

SEAL TIDDLERS
 In Seal Church Hall £2 per session pre schoolers and parents/Carers Monday mornings 9.30-11.30 tea drinks snacks for children art activities singing.

SEAL ART CLUB
Meets in Seal Village Hall on Thursday afternoons.
Due to limited space there are no spaces for more members of this club at present, but there are opportunities to share ideas and experiences to help you and your friends set up your own.

SLIMMING WORLD

Our library in Seal is back! Jillian Marsch, our new librarian, has now been able to resume all the normal activities as listed below.
Opening hours - Tuesdays 2pm - 5pm, Thursdays 10am - 1pm, Fridays 10am-3pm and Saturdays, 10am - 2pm.
Derek - the IT Guru/Buddy, is available for appointments on Thursday mornings from 10.15am. If anybody would like any help, please book an appointment in the library.
From Friday October 8th, Rhyme Time at 10.15, followed by Story Time at 10.45, will make a very welcome return, with Clare.
