Hello One and All,

So - we are almost there! At the end of another year, and looking forward to welcoming the third decade of the 21st century! (Do you feel really old now)?

We will kick off with the results of this morning’s draw of our 100 Club.

We were playing with 58 numbers, giving £144 to the Seal Village Fund and a first prize of

As always, if you would like to join this 100 Club, please e mail me and I will get you the joining instructions, or you can pick some up from our Christmas lights Switch On Party tomorrow.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all of you who turned out last Saturday, to help decorate the village with lights in the High Street, The Green, Zambra Way, Church Street and Bentleys Bungalows. It was a great turnout, and what a lovely atmosphere. So many people meeting each other, and coming together to beautify our village for Christmas!

Another massive thank you goes to Ashley, from Birch’s Cafe, who donated bacon sandwiches for all our helpers. Not a mean feat, as this year, there were at least 30 helpers! Thank you Ashley - hugely appreciated! By the way - just heard news of your future plans - we all wish you the best of luck, but you will certainly be missed in this village! 

Whilst we are talking generosity, the team of ladies co-ordinating the British Legion Poppy Appeal in Seal this year, would like to report a taking of £1335.24 this year. That is an amazing amount compared to previous years. Thank you Seal! They would like to hand over this job to someone else next year. Is there anyone in the community who would be able to take it on? 

PLEASE REMEMBER YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A CHRISTMAS TABLE DECORATION TONIGHT AT SEAL CHURCH HALL AT 7.30 WITH CHRIS AND MAGGIE, in aid of Seal Church. Please call chris on 01732 763585 to book your place. All equipment supplied, have a glass of wine and a mince pie for just £20.

TOMORROW WE HAVE OUR CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION IN THE VILLAGE HALL FROM 2.30pm - 5pm. This is a free party with a great local magician to entertain you all. Anybody of any age, who lives, works or plays in seal is welcome! The entertainer will be present from 3-4pm, then santa will pay a visit and help us to turn on the lights at 4.30 after a light tea. We just ask you to bring a small plate of food to share. We shall come back into the hall for a few traditional carols after the lights are on. There will be the opportunity to 'win the gin' by rolling any pound coins you may have about your person, and the closest after 10 minutes will 'win the gin'. Also a pound coin raffle to win half the proceeds so please bring plenty of pound coins with you if you wish to take part!


NEXT WEEKEND WE HAVE OUR CHRISTINGLE SERVICE AT ST PETER AND ST PAUL CHURCH AT 10.00 am ON SUNDAY 15th DECEMBER, followed by a cake stall and Christmas gift stall at 11.30am. All welcome,


THE CAROL SERVICE AT ST PETER AND ST PAUL TAKES PLACE AT 6.30pm on SUNDAY 22nd. Please join us for this beautiful service and stay for a glass of wine and mince pies.


THEN, AS ALWAYS, AT 4pm ON CHRISTMAS EVE, WE HAVE OUR EVER POPULAR, CRIB SERVICE. Children of all ages (1-99) love this celebration, where the nativity crib is built up throughout the service. Please join us! Midnight Mass starts at 11.30pm (with carols from the choir from 11pm), and the Christmas Day Communion service, with a story in place of a sermon, is at 10 am.

Without wishing to sound like THE GRINCH, the lights come down on Saturday January 4th. We will, of course need our willing volunteers (and anybody else we can drag along), to assist with taking them down and boxing up for next year.
There will, of course, be an incentive by way of bacon sarnies, to encourage the crowds back. Please, if you can, join us at 9.30 outside Seal Village Hall to remove and get together after for brunch and maybe a pint!

Sorry to break the magic!

That pretty much brings us to a close on 2019, but we are already hearing of planned events for 2020!

On Saturday January 25th, there will be a Scottish themed Beetle Drive in honour of Robbie Burns. BYO  DRINKS AND SNACKS. SOME NIBBLES WILL BE PROVIDED.£5 a ticket. This will take place in the Church Hall at 7.30pm. Please call Jill to book your tickets on 01732 762803. Proceeds to Seal Church.

On Saturday March 14th, Frances Fish is holding a Quiz night in the Village Hall, to raise set up costs for Seal’s next Garden Safari on June 14th! LOOK OUT FOR MORE INFORMATION.

November update from Know Your Neighbours

We held our November 100 Club Draw this morning at the Friday Group in the Church Hall. This month we were playing with 56 numbers, so that puts a further £140 in the Seal Village Fund, and makes a first prize of £94 and a second prize of £47.4Should you wish to join this 100 Club, please email me for details.

We had a very productive get together in The Five Bells on Wednesday October 9th. Thank you to all who turned out, on a particularly dismal, damp evening. We discussed the plans for the Christmas lighting in the High Street, and looked to pinpoint other areas, where our battery lights could be used to the best advantage. If you would like to see some of our community lights in your road or neighbourhood , please get a small team of willing volunteers together to put them in trees, shrubs, or other communal areas, and we can provide you with some strings of battery lights ready to go. The main High Street lighting will be put up on Saturday November 30th, and, as ever, we are looking for willing volunteers to help with this please. We will be starting at about 9am and work through until around midday, when we will all be treated to a bacon sandwich (or alternative if appropriate). Please don't be shy - come forward, and let me know by email if you can help please.

Other topics raised, included how we can enhance this community with various new activities to keep us all occupied during the long, dark winter evenings. I will put a list together separately for this and send soon.

Chris Tavare is still looking for a couple of further volunteers to join the Seal Speedwatch Group. This is a very important project, so please contact Chris by email christavspc@btinternet.com

You will see further down, that Seal Scouts are holding their Christmas Fair on Saturday November 30th. Please , if you can help with this, let me know, and I will pass your details on to Helen Davies. They are holding a meeting at the Scout Hut in Julilee Rise at 12 midday this Saturday, so if you can make that, the Scout leaders would be very grateful for your input.

The Scarecrow Festival in aid of St Peter and St Paul Church, and the Harvest Lunch, was very successful, and enjoyed by many. The winners were:-

1st Prize for group entry - The Decline of Judge Judy Cator - The Friday Group.

You are all welcome to join our Talking Village Hosts for a chat and a cup of tea or coffee. Apologies to those who turned up this Monday, and found the cafe closed. This was unexpected, but occasionally, things happen beyond our control. I would like to thank Ashley and her team, for always making us so welcome, and, of course, Denise and her team at the library on Saturdays.

These two halls provide great facilities in this village, and we need to support them both to keep them from falling into disrepair, and worse - losing them altogether.

Our Pamper Evening which was held at Lavender Fields Care Home last Thursday, was a very enjoyable evening, enabling several of the residents to benefit from the treatments, as well as ladies from the area. I would like to thank the residents and staff at Lavender Fields, for accommodating us in this lovely setting. The evening wasn't an amazing financial success, but made in the region of just £200, but we did purchase some screens for future events, and the general feeling, was a good time was had by all.This money, as with other Pamper Evenings, will be ring-fenced for the Christmas lights and celebrations.

We have a childrens' entertainer booked for our Family Celebration in the Village Hall on Saturday December 7th. The doors will open at 2.15, the entertainer is with us from 2.30-3.30, then there will be a shared light tea, and at 4pm, we will watch the turning on of the High Street lights, with a few Christmas carols. This will be over by 4.30, so be prompt and don't miss out. This is a free event, paid for by Know Your Neighbours and Seal Village Fund - all you have to do is turn up, and bring a small plate of food to share for the shared tea.

Many of you will have noticed that Coldbreath Butchers held a PINK DAY FOR CANCER RESEARCH on Monday October 21st. This event raised £472.85 for this very good cause. Well done all of you!

October update

Welcome to the October newsletter for KYN in Seal.

We held our October 100 Club Draw this morning at the Friday Group in the Church Hall. Despite two new people joining our project this month, we had two non-payments of regulars, therefore, the figure remains the same as September. Hopefully, we will get on top of this for November, and have a little more in the kitty. Should you wish to join this 100 Club, please email me for details.

This leaves £135 in the SVF again this month, which continues to add to the ascending funds for community projects, including the Christmas lighting and family Christmas party, which was one of the reasons the 100 club was originally set up. I would like to take this opportunity to thank 2 of our local residents who have generously made donations over the past recent weeks, towards this year's lighting - one of £50, and another has donated their 100 club winnings of £90. We will be discussing plans for this year's Christmas lighting  at our meeting in The Five Bells next Wednesday evening. Please join us - everybody who works, lives or plays in Seal, is considered part of Know Your Neighbours, so you are all welcome to come along and have your say. Just buy your own drinks from the bar, and partake of some light snacks we which will be provided . This is your opportunity to put forward ideas for village activities and discus how village fund is spent.

We have our KYN Pamper Evening booked for Thursday 24th October, at Lavender Fields . This year we are starting early - 3.30pm and will finish at 9pm. We listened to what you told us last time - most people didn't want such late appointments, so hopefully, those that can, will fill the earlier slots, leaving the later ones for those of you coming after work, or putting children to bed, etc. Please book your tickets and appointments early, to avoid disappointment. Last time, many left their bookings to the last minute, and were unable to get the treatments they wanted. We are also looking for more volunteers for this event please, as we are a few regulars down, and the event is somewhat longer. Don't be shy - get in touch, and get involved. Of course, this will give you free entry, but any treatments will still be payable to the therapist.

SOME LAST MINUTE INFORMATION FROM SEVENOAKS DISTRICT COUNCIL

SDC have arranged a public information event for local residents in order to showcase proposals for two rural exceptions housing schemes in Seal Parish.  The event is taking place on Wednesday 30 October, 3pm through to 8pm, in Seal Village Hall.
Sevenoaks District Council officers will be in attendance from the Property Team and the Housing Policy Team

This looks to be an interesting meeting for all of us. I'm sure many of you would like to attend.

There are also several road closures planned in the near future, which will affect us as residents in Seal. Please lok at the Parish Council website for full information.

Seal Speedwatch, Scarecrows and Pampering

SEAL SPEEDWATCH!

Chris Tavaré has said "Having recently joined Seal Parish Council
I am setting up a Seal Speedwatch Group.
I am looking to put together a group of 7 or 8
to monitor vehicle speeds in and around Seal.
The purpose of the group as described on the
 Community Speedwatch website can be seen below. "

If you have some time to spare, please contact Chris as soon as you can,
so that the project can get off the ground very soon.
We all know how speeding traffic affects this village,
so it is time we do our bit to keeping it in check.

It is great to see so many scarecrows rising from the depths this year.
We have lots of new people entering, which is always great,
but please remember to submit your fee and entry form
if you wish to be added to the trail map,
and judged on October 1st.
Forms are available on St Peter and St Paul Church website,
or at the back of the church. Julian also has some in Highland Printers.

Tickets are also on sale now, for the Harvest Lunch and Scarecrow Safari on October 6th.

followed by apple pie and ice cream.
Vegetarian/vegan options available., served in the Church Hall at 1pm,

August update

Good Morning Seal Neighbours,

Welcome to your August update !

Firstly, we have just held the August draw for the KYN 100 Club, and these are the results. This month we were playing with 54 paid numbers (a few have moved on, so we are a little fewer again), leaving a prize fund of £135 and £135 in the Seal Village Fund.

Congratulations to them, and as always, if you wish to join, please e mail me for details.

Please remember to complete the Sevenoaks District Council parking survey if you haven't already done so. If you do not live in the centre of the village, you may not have been sent a hard copy, but you can still have your say on line at www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/parkingconsultations. This is an important issue for the residents and businesses in our village, and the Parish Council have asked SDC to look at this as a matter of importance. Anybody that needs to park in the village - residents, businesses, workers, shoppers and other visitors need to complete this if you want your views listened to, by August 9th at 5pm. 

I have  been asked to spread the word of the new bus which is running through the village.  Go Bus have added Routes 6 and 56 and here is the first review - ' So impressed with our new bus service this morning .7am bus, lovely driver £1.70 to station (less if you buy a 10 trip ticket).

Let's hope enough people use this new service to keep it! Timetable available from Go Bus.

I have also been asked to mention that a cat was hit by a car outside the Ganga Restaurant on July 14th, and was taken to the Out of Hours vets - Pennards in Sevenoaks.

 Apparently Pennards were great and did all they could, but sadly , they had to put the cat down. We send our sympathy if this was your pet, but would like to thank the kind driver of the car following the distraught person who hit it, for taking him to Pennards. 

LAVENDER FIELDS SUMMER FAIR - SATURDAY AUGUST 3RD - 2PM-4PM IN THE GROUNDS OF LAVENDER FIELDS - AND A HUGE THANK YOU TO THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE COME FORWARD TO MAN STALLS!

All the seats for our Broadstairs trip are now filled. For those coming, please arrange payment to me as soon as possible. Cheques to be made payable to Seal Village Fund.

Remember that The Pavilion Restaurant at Wildernesse House is now open on Thursdays 6pm-0pm, Fridays 12-2pm, and 6-9pm, Saturdays 10-2pm and 66-9pm and Sundays for lunch 12-2pm.

A reminder that our Talking Village takes place 4 times weekly - Monday afternoons 1.45-2.45 in Birch's Cafe, Thursdays at Tiddlers in Seal Church Hall 10-12 term time only, Fridays at The Friday Group 10-12 Seal Church Hall and Saturdays, 10-11am in Seal Library. Why not join our TV hosts for a cuppa and a chat? 

Do we all know that we have 2 halls in our village for hire - Seal Village Hall - contact Gerry on 01959 522545 and Seal Church Hall - contact Maggie on 07517 234557. Both ideal for childrens' parties and other functions and meetings.

Look out for information about Seal's next Scarecrow Festival which will take place between Sunday 15th September and October 6th. Get your thinking caps on, and create

 your very own scarecrow to adorn your property, or another agreed space in the village.

We have our next Pamper Evening booked for Thursday October 24th from 3.30-9pm at Lavender Fields. We already have some really interesting therapists booked, so start planning what treatments you may want to try.

Late April Update

As there is so much going on at the moment, I have decided to send an extra update to Know Your Neighbours. The first 2 items, are from our Parish Council, who, as you may understand, are having a particularly busy time right now. So, here goes:-

FYI

Further to the occupation of the Seal Recreation Ground, the Seal District Councillors and the Parish Clerk accompanied by 2 police officers went around all 24 caravans/campers to serve request to leave notices. Most were polite and there will be some repairs making good required and tidying up to do when they leave. The notice gives 24hrs notice and if they haven’t moved off the site legal proceedings will be taken. In the mean time the Parish Council advise not to go to the recreation ground.

Secondly, 

 DO YOU USE YOUR COMMUNITY HALLS?  HOW DO YOU USE THEM? HOW COULD YOU USE THEM DIFFERENTLY?

Seal Parish Council are conducting a survey on the use of the local community halls - the Village Hall, the Pavilion and the Church Hall (the first two are run by the Parish Council, the third by the church) You can find the survey here. Please complete this if you can, particularly if you are not going to be able to visit the Village Hall on the bank holiday weekend of May 4th-6th, for the U3A Art Exhibition. This will be a very interesting activity anyway, but there will also be a chance to speak to some of your Parish Councillors, about our community hall facilities. 

On a different note, Seal Parish Council will be electing their officers on May 2nd. Please see their website for more information.

On Thursday May 15th, you will also have the opportunity to meet and speak to your new Parish Council, at the Annual Parish Meeting, which will take place in Seal Pavilion at 7.30pm. The Council will be presenting its annual Community award, so please come along to congratulate this year's winner!

The 100 Club is now running at 47 participants, so gradually rising month on month. This will make for a healthy total to be spent on village projects, whether events, activities, or any other form of enhancement. Please let me know if you wish to purchase a number for £5 each month.

We are still looking for a Treasurer for our Village Fund, so please be on the look out for any likely candidates. The 100 Club will run much more easily when people can set up standing orders if they wish to.

The Spring Clean went really well on April 7th, with many of you, young and not so young, turned out in force to clear up our village. Many people have commented that this is something we might be able to repeat at more regular intervals, so that it isn't such an arduous task.

Our Seal Talking Village goes from strength to strength, with the chance to meet up with others regularly, on Monday afternoons in Birch's (1.45-2.45), Thursday Mornings at Seal Tiddlers in the Church Hall (10am-midday), Friday mornings at Friday Group in the Church Hall (10am-midday) and Saturday mornings in Seal Library (10am-11am). A big 'Thank you' to our hosts at these events.

April update from Know Your Neighbours

Welcome to our update of village events and activities, for you to join in with, for this month.

Monday April 1st - 7.30pm - Seal Village Hall The History Group have a talk from a representative of the National Trust, to talk about the History of Chartwell.

SUNDAY APRIL 7TH

Seal Village will be getting a Spring Clean, but we need you to join us to help. All ages welcome! This is to spruce up areas of the centre of the village needing attention. If you are aware of any 'hot spots', please let me know, and I will pass the information on to Matt, who is organising this project.

You can come along to the Village Hall at 11am, or to the Church  at 12.30, where you will be fully equipped with hi-vis jackets, pick-up grippers, bags, etc, and are welcome to join us in the Church Hall at 2.30 at the end, for light refreshment. There will also be an award presented to a member of our parish in recognition of their contribution to the community over the past year. Please come and support this event.

Seal Talking Village continues to meet every Monday 1.45-2.45 in Birch's, Thursdays 10-12 at Tiddlers, Seal Church Hall, Fridays at Friday Group, 10-12 Seal Church Hall, and every Saturday, 10-11am in Seal Library.Please pop along to any of these meeting places for a cuppa and a chat.

The 100 Club has its next draw on Friday April 5th. If you wish to sign up, please contact me as above. I will publish the winning names and numbers in next month's Advertiser, and send out an added update nest weekend.

Please join us for these events. We need you if we are going to have any sort of community spirit in this village. By the way, a Treasurer is still needed to help manage our village fund. Please let us know of anybody who may be interested to take on this role.

Babs Bartholomew will be leading three informal & gentle Lent Prayer Walks . The first will be between Seal church & Kemsing Well. The second will climb the Kemsing hillside to the cross of daffodils. The third may be in Hadlow: details to be confirmed. Meeting at the lych gate, St Peter's & St Paul's at 11.15am.
PARISH SPRING CLEAN April 7
Matt Brown, one of our Parish Councillors, is organizing a village spring clean on April 7th. This is the same day as the APCM, but he has kindly reorganized the start time to take account of this. A group will start at 12.30 from outside the church hall. Equipment and maps will be provided, and there will be refreshments for the workers in the church hall. Please consider helping, to show support for our local community.

March update from Know Your Neighbours

Hello Everybody,

I hope you are all enjoying this wonderful, if a little eerie, spring weather. I seem to remember that this time last year, we were battling down the hatches in preparation for ‘The Beast From The East’. This year, the garden centres are heaving with optimistic gardeners, all risking tasks, not usually considered until well into March. Don’t you just love the diversity of our fine, British weather?

So, possibly due to the brilliant weather, several groups have come up with some dates for events, so here we have the dates, venues and contact details for each:-

Seal Village Association AGM and Know Your Neighbours Have Your Say -

Seal Church Hall on Friday March 1st at 11am. This will take place during the Friday Group session and all are welcome! (Agenda and SVA accounts can be found here). Please note, the evening meeting mentioned last month, will now take place a little later in spring,hopefully, in the Five Bells. (More details to follow). The first of our 100 Club draws will also take place on Friday March 1st at 11am in the Church Hall.

Lavender Fields Spring Fair 

Thursday March 7

All are welcome to join the residents and friends of Lavender Fields between 10am and midday for their Spring Fair, where there will be cakes, Easter gifts, a raffle, tea, coffee etc.

St Peter and St Paul Church Seal Lent Lunch 

Sunday March 10th

Seal Church Hall - Midday to 2.30pm. Enjoy a simple lunch of homemade soups, bread and apple pudding for £5 per head. Proceeds to be shared between Christian Aid and the Church. All welcome.

A wide range of treatments will be available.  Tickets and bookings for treatments will be available from mid March.

Let’s Get Plastered - An evening of music with Dan Clews and his students, at St Peter and St Paul Church Seal - Friday May 10th. More details to follow next month.

Coach Trip to Broadstairs During Their Famous Folk Week - Friday August August 16th. Tickets remain at £12 per adult and £8 per child.

Talking Village on Monday afternoons in Birch’s, Thursday mornings at Tiddlers , Friday mornings at Friday Group and Saturday mornings in Seal Library.  ( morning meetings from 10am and afternoons, 1.45-2.45).

Friday Group at the Church Hall every Friday from 10-12.

The Tea Set, Childrens Rhyme Time, Book Club and Childrens’ Craft Club in Seal Library. 

Various weekly yoga and Pilates classes in Seal Village Hall and Church Hall.

We still have numbers available for our Know Your Neighbours 100 Club.

PLEASE NOTE, IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED AN EMAIL ABOUT FEBRUARY’S PAYMENT, YOU ARE NOT SIGNED UP, THEREFORE, NOT IN THE DRAW. IF YOU WISH TO TAKE PART, PLEASE CONTACT ME ON marionjgilchrist@gmail.com. This month, we should have 30 numbers sold, which will mean £75 in prize money and £75 in the village fund. The draw will be made at Friday Group (which is open to all) on the first Friday of each month at 10.30am. The winners will be informed on the day of the draw, and their names and numbers will be published in the Local Advertiser and the KYN update, the following month. The proceeds from this will go toward projects to enhance the community of Seal in whatever ways you care to put forward for discussion.

In the past, SVA funds have been used for projects put forward by Seal Cubs and Beavers, Seal School, , Seal Church and Sevenoaks National Childbirth Trust. This year we still have some improvements to make to our Christmas lighting, plus we would like to improve on the family celebration which is booked for Saturday December 7th. If you have ideas for a summer event, and are able to help organise one, please bring your ideas to the KYN Have Your Say sessions, on Friday morning March 1, or at the evening event at The Five Bells (date to be confirmed)

We are close to having the Village Directory of organisations and activities, complete, so hopefully, we will be able to put out next month.

We had a good morning at the second of our new Talking Village sessions at the Library, with a number of people joining us to chat over coffee and biscuits. Our Next Talking Village is on Monday in Birch's cafe.
