What is "Know Your Neighbours"?

"Know Your Neighbours" is a grass-roots community group in Seal, near Sevenoaks in Kent. The group is made up of anyone in the village who wants to get involved - individuals, clubs and societies, businesses, church and schools, parish council, and many others.
We organise local events through the year - fetes, street parties, Christmas events etc. - and we hold social gatherings, just so that people can get to "know their neighbours". There's no "committee" - anyone who turns up for meetings is welcome to help in any way they are able.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE, OR BE ADDED TO THE EMAIL LIST, contact Marion Gilchrist , who coordinates the group, or Anne Le Bas, who maintains this blog.
This Blog will be archived from July 7 2024 following the retirement of Rev Anne Le Bas who has maintained it. Know Your Neighbours will continue however. Please email Marion if you would like to know more!

KYN update Jan 15

Welcome to this week's Know Your Neighbours update.

Before we get started on any reports for this week, I have to say a huge thank you to those of you that turned  out to help get the Christmas lights down last weekend. Especially, those who couldn't make the Sunday, so braved the elements on Saturday. It is great to have them all safely stowed away for next year. We will have to replace some more for Christmas 2022, as there were some damaged, but as we know, this is going to be an ongoing situation, and the majority have served us well for 3 or 4 years.
As the 100 Club finances this project, we are mostly covered for all we should need. If you would like to join the 100 Club, please let me know and I will send you joining instructions.

Know Your Neighbours Zoom Meeting
This took place last night - many thanks to Annie Fish, who hosted this for us, and those who gave their time to join in the discussions. .We were joined by just 10 people, and several  gave apologies but sent their ideas. It was disappointing not to have many youngsters involved, but this was the outcome:-

Throughout the whole jubilee celebration period, we are hoping to have a display of Seal through the past 70 years - probably in the Village Hall (to be confirmed).
David Williams has also kindly offered to guide another of his ever popular historic walks or two!

Friday June 3trd 12.30-4.30 Seal Village Allotments will hold a Jubilee Picnic.

Saturday June 4th - pm Frances Fish is going to organise another Garden Safari around the gardens of homes in Seal village.(Proceeds ro Kent Air Ambulance)
IF YOU HAVE ANY UNWANTED CHRISTMAS GIFTS OR ITEMS THAT MIGHT BE APPROPRIATE< FRANCES IS LOOKING TO PUT SOME RAFFLE PRIZES TOGETHER FOR THIS AND OTHER EVENTS IN THE VILLAGE. Please let me know and we will arrange collection.

Sunday June 5th - The Big Lunch on Seal Recreation Ground, with food outlets being present but you can bring your own picnic if you prefer. There will be games and fun for all ages - competitions, races and general fun activities for all.

We all felt that a good spruce up of our village beforehand, would be a great start, so look out for dates and times of community litter picks, etc. Also, we felt it would be great to encourage as many people as possible, to decorate/adorn the village appropriately. Here are some ideas:-

Planting your front gardens or outside areas in red white and blue - hanging baskets or borders, etc.
Display a 'Royal Scene' in your windows - rather along the line of Advent Windows, but with a royal theme
Display a royal scarecrow outside your home or in a public area where he/she or it, will be seen.
Decorate your home with red, white and blue bunting and flags
Obviously, this is a very early stage in the planning, so some changes may have to be made as we confirm availablity etc. We will keep you updated weekly via these emails.
There will be lots of opportunities for you to get involved in the planning of these events, so please let us know if you are interested to help (before you get press-ganged)!

Ideas for fund raising were also discussed, as we may need some extra set up costs. One idea, (very popular I might add), was to have a @QUEEN OF PUDDINGS AND QUIZ EVENING' The idea being, to encourage as many people to create their favourite (or new to them) pudding for all to sample, and have 'A RIGHT ROYAL QUIZ' alongside the tasting. Please let me know if you would be interested in attending such an evening, and of course, if you feel you would like to help organise it.

Another idea which has been on the agenda for some time, would be to have an evening of close magic and a supper, in one of the halls. The entertainer we have used for christmas parties, is very popular, and several people have asked if this would be possible.

The Village Covid Commemoration tree
We have received several ideas of suitable species, which will need to be discussed further with horticultural experts, to ensure suitability. We discussed the possibility of fixing a water butt ro the downpipe of the building concerned, so that watering wouldn't be so difficult. Several people have kindly come forward and offered help with watering.
Species being considered are:-
Holly
Crab apple
Amelanchier
Salix.

We did not get around to discussing potential new groups, as none of the people who had put their names forward, were in attendance, so it was felt better to leave this until the appropriate pepole were there.

SEAL TIDDLERS

This group meets in the Church Hall on Monday mornings between (.30-11.30, but as Covid rates are still high, they have decided to start this term on January 31st.

KYN update Jan 8

Welcome to the first Know Your Neighbours Update of 2022.  A very Happy, Healthy and Hopeful New Year to you all, and here's to a year where we can see a return to all sorts of activities we have been putting on hold for so long.

Further to my appeal last week of finding a more durable option for the Christmas messages on the village Christmas tree, we have had a few ideas put forward, and some are being tried out as we speak. Hopefully, this will result in a more effective solution for Christmas 2022. We were surprised to see such a take up on this for its first year, and many people have said they appreciated it. Of course, we will still have the opportunity to hang our prayer stars on the other beautiful tree in the church.

This morning, we held the first 100 Club draw for 2022. We were playing with 66 tickets and the winners were:-
1st prize £100 no 13 Julian Gilchrist (I felt like reducing the size of the font here)
2nd prize £65 no 38 Annie Fish
Congratulations to both of you, and remember to ask for joining instructions if you wish to join this scheme. It costs £5 each month, payable by standing order, and the proceeds pay for Christmas street lights and other village community projects as needed.Just email me by return for information.

We have mentioned the Winter Mini Challenge from Kent Libraries, and this is still going on until January 16th. Children can sign up for free online, to earn digital rewards and download a certificate. They just have to have read 3 books between December 1st and January 16th. Find out more at bit.ly/WinterMiniChallenge2021. What better way to spend some of these dull days before heading back to school and in the evenings when you get home!

HELP NEEDED PLEASE! PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF TIME!!
Just a timely reminder that the Christmas lights come down this weekend. If you can give an hour or so of your time to help with this, we will meet outside the Village Hall this Saturday Jan 8th, at 10.30 (not 9.30 as mentioned last week), and again at 9.30 on Sunday for those who would prefer to help then. I have to say that the forecast for Sunday is much better than Saturday's, but please let me know when you might be able to assist, and please bring ladders if you can.

IMPORTANT ZOOM MEETING - CHANGE OF DATE!!
I believe I was being rather optimistic that people may have wished to think about anything other than Christmas or the New Year over the past few weeks! So, we ended up with just two of us wishing to attend this Zoom meeting - we were probably fairly reluctant too if I'm honest! We have therefore decided to move this meeting to Thursday January 13th at 8pm. We will still then just catch the first Parish Council meeting, so it will be great to have a good balance of peoples' views than just those of two.
The main purpose of this meeting, is to discuss the choice of species for our commemorative tree for outside the dentist on the Main Road. There will also be maintenance issues to discuss - how to keep it watered and fed, etc, and that is something we wish to get in place before the tree is planted.
Secondly, we want to look at options for the biggest royal celebration ever! Never have we had a monarch reign so long, and we want to make sure that we involve as many of our community as possible in the celebrations next June.We want to ensure that however we decide to  celebrate, it is the choice of many and not just a few, so please get involved in these discussions! IF YOU HAVE STRONG VIEWS AS TO HOW WE CELEBRATE THE JUBILEE IN JUNE, PLEASE GET IN TOUCH AND JOIN THE DISCUSSION! As always, if you can't join the zoom meeting, but have a view, please get in touch by email, and we will make sure your voice is still heard.
Then, if there is time, there will be the opportunity to chat about potential new groups for our village. So far we have - walking groups (especially suitable for dog walking, art group and bridge club. Let's see if we can't get one or two off the ground for 2022!
Please let me know if you would be interested in joining these discussions, and I will ensure you receive your Zoom invitation.

TOMORROW IN SEAL LIBRARY 12-1.30pm
Clare will be doing a super craft session - ALL THINGS SNOWY! Do come along and bring your young and young at heart with you!

KYN update Jan 1

Welcome to the last Know Your Neighbours Update of 2021. Another, strange year I guess we would say, but a little better and a lot more hopeful, than 2019. Here's to a great 2022.

We had some brilliant activities over the Christmas period, including some wonderful Church services (indoors and out),  the Christmas Nativity Crib Trail, and our beautiful Advent Window trail. Many thanks to Anne le Bas, for keeping us going over Christmas in Church, and to Barbara Martin, for organising the Advent windows. Thanks as well, of course, to those of you who contributed by displaying such lovely scenes in your windows.

It was very moving to see so many stars hanging from the village Christmas tree outside the kebab shop, so we feel it is something worth repeating. However, I'm sure most of you will have noticed how the weather has taken its toll on our messages. We are looking at ways to repeat this with more durable (but still affordable\0 options. If you have any ideas, please email me at this address.

In our last update, the Winter Mini Challenge from Kent Libraries was mentioned. This is still going on until January 16th. Children can sign up for free online, to earn digital rewards and download a certificate. They just have to have read 3 books between December 1st and January 16th. Find out more at bit.ly/WinterMiniChallenge2021. What better way to spend some of these dull days before heading back to school and in the evenings when you get home!

SEAL PARISH COUNCIL WILDFLOWER PROJECT
Following on from our wildflower talk from the Kent Wildlife Trust's WILD ABOUT GARDENS team, are running a series of zoom sessions this winter on WILDLIFE FRIENDLY GARDEN, This is a great way of encouraging wildflowers and pollinators to your garden, This, is combination with our wildflower verges project, will also help create joined up 'pathways' for bees, butterflies and other key pollinators in our parish.
Details of the events can be seen on the Parish Council website, but the zoom sessions cost £5 a session, and are as follows:-
Thursday 13th January - 7.30-9pm Nature Friendly Gardening for Beginners.
Wednesday January 26th 10,30am- midday - Managing pests and diseases in a Nature Friendly Way
Saturday Feb 5th 3pm-5pm - Building and Maintaining a Wildlife Pond
Monday March 7th 7.30-9pm - Wilder Lawns
Sat March 26th 11-12.30 - Using weeds and wildflowers in a garden to attract bees, butterflies and moths.

Deniz's coffee shop still has some copies of our Seal Historical Guided Walk books for just £5 a copy. All proceeds go to the Seal Village Fund. A perfect time to walk around our beautiful village and see it through new eyes!

HELP NEEDED PLEASE!
Sadly now though - on to the more mundane of activities. We have the Village Hall booked out on Saturday January 8th, to collect and pack away the Christmas lights, from the High Street areas, and the communal areas which have been decorated. If you can spare an hour or two on Saturday January8th, any time between 9.30 and midday, we would be very grateful for your assistance please. If you helped put the lights up, and feel you could take down the same ones, that would be great, as you will know where the fixings are etc. However, any new helpers will be made very welcome. As I have been pointing out along the way, quite a few of our lights have had to be replaced this year, and a lot will have seen their last working year by January 8th. So, as we always anticipated, this is a constant  'work in progress' situation, but, fortunately, our trusty 100 Club, manages to fund the majority of all replacements, and having expanded a little further up the High Street this year, we will hopefully stretch a little further next year.If you don't already take part in this monthly draw, and would like to find out more, please contact me and I will send you details. I would also like to thank those of you that have contributed donations throughout the year (one even on Christmas morning). This all helps tremendously, when so many have to be replaced . Thank you all for your support with this project.

IMPORTANT ZOOM MEETING
Finally, we will be holding a KYN Zoom meeting at 8pm on Thursday 6th January. The main purpose of this meeting, is to discuss the choice of species for our commemorative tree for outside the dentist on the Main Road. This will be up for discussion at the next Parish Council meeting on January 14th, so it would be sensible to have a good overview of as many as possible before this date.
