A blog for the "Know Your Neighbours" group. Connecting people in Seal, near Sevenoaks in Kent.
What is "Know Your Neighbours"?
"Know Your Neighbours" is a grass-roots community group in Seal, near Sevenoaks in Kent. The group is made up of anyone in the village who wants to get involved - individuals, clubs and societies, businesses, church and schools, parish council, and many others.
We organise local events through the year - fetes, street parties, Christmas events etc. - and we hold social gatherings, just so that people can get to "know their neighbours". There's no "committee" - anyone who turns up for meetings is welcome to help in any way they are able.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE, OR BE ADDED TO THE EMAIL LIST, contact Marion Gilchrist , who coordinates the group, or Anne Le Bas, who maintains this blog.
This Blog will be archived from July 7 2024 following the retirement of Rev Anne Le Bas who has maintained it. Know Your Neighbours will continue however. Please email Marion if you would like to know more!

Mid April update
A quick mid- month update, as two events have been
confirmed, that will be popular, and places need to be booked early!
FOLKING FOR THE ROOF!
Firstly, well known singer songwriter, Dan Clews is putting
on an event at St Peter and St Paul Church, Seal, on Saturday May 19th at
7.30.This will be an evening of folk and blues, showcasing Dan's young
musicians, under the 'WE TEACH' label.Combining with other bands, the show will
include Dan, performing some of his latest songs.
Dan is kindly doing this to help raise funds for our church,
particularly the current round of roof renovations, among the other, never
ending repairs!
There will be a licensed bar and snacks available.
For further information, please contact Martin on 07977 487277 or e mailing info@stonepitts.com
TRIP TO HYTHE AND DYMCHURCH
On Friday, June 1st, (the last day
of spring half term holiday for most), we have a coach booked for another dual
destination trip to Hythe and Dymchurch. The coach will pick up at Seal Church
at 9.30am and be back by 5pm. You have the option of being dropped at Hythe or
Dymchurch, and in the past, some people have then taken the miniature
railway to the other destination and collect the coach from the other end. As
long as you tell us on the day, where you would like to be collected, you won't
get lost or left behind in Shepway!
This is a combined Know Your
Neighbours and Seal Church event, so the tickets will go quickly. At the
moment, the cost stands at £8 per adult and £5 for children. This is the
maximum cost, but we have a deal being made, and may even get the costs down
further. To book your places, please contact me on 07909 905975 or e mail :-
Next, I have to apologise for the
error in last month's update! If you are interested in helping with our Seal
Speedwatch, please contact sealparishc@btconnect.com
rather than the email address I provided before (which is many years out of
date)!
Please . also, remember to contact
either Frances, by emailing frances88@hotmail.co.uk or myself as above, if you are willing to open your
garden for Seal's 1st Garden Safari on Sunday July 1st. (or, of course, if you'd like to
suggest somebody else with a great garden. They do not have to be large gardens.
In fact, people love to be inspired by seeing small spaces turned into
something special!
We are also still asking people to
vote on their favourite charity, to benefit from this event. The local
charities that have been put forward are:-
Eleanor Foundation - A charity
providing hospice facilities for children
Porchlight - A well known local
homeless charity, providing many support services
Kenward Trust.- A local service
working with alcohol and substance misuse .
Please e mail me with your
preference by the end of May.

February update - what's on in Seal
We would like to invite you all to our first KYN meeting for
2018.
We have three sessions booked:-
Friday February 23rd at 10.30am - 12 Seal Church Hall
Friday February 23rd 7.30pm- 9pm - Seal Church
Hall
Saturday February 24th 10am- 11.30 - Seal Village Hall
Refreshments will be available at all three sessions.
The idea is that as many people in the community as
possible, can get to one of these sessions. We are hoping that the local
organisations will be able to send some representation, and information about
themselves, so that we can all see what is going on in our village. These are
open to anybody who lives, works, or plays (in any capacity) in Seal. Not only
do we get to meet new friends (and old), but also have the opportunity to put
our own ideas forward, for activities we would like to see happening in our
community. We know there are loads of you out there with all kinds of skills,
talents and innovative ideas, so please bring them with you, and let us see
your ideas take shape! The session on Friday 23rd at 10am, will also hold the
AGM of Seal Village Association. There is a vacancy on this group, for
Secretary. (Not arduous - look out for further details from SVA).
At the end of this update, you will find some info regarding

events:-
Waitrose donated £260 to Seal Over
60's through their community awards. Thank you for your support.
The Childrens' Choir in Seal
Church goes from strength to strength and many children are having lots of fun.
Please bring your singing children along on Wednesday evenings to see if they
will enjoy this too. 5pm - 5.30pm Seal Church Hall (term-time only).
Dance For Fun continues in Seal
Village Hall on Tuesday mornings from 10.30 to 11.30. £3 per session.
Call Luci on 07748 008 431 for
more information.
Seal Village Association - This is
a group which was set up in the 90's, as Seal Charter Fayre Committee, to
celebrate the new millenium, when we held a full village event, It changed its
name to the more appropriate, present one in 2010. The SVA has supported a
number of village events organised by Know Your Neighbours over those years.
These include, Sealfests, Street Parties, Big Lunches and several village
fetes. The SVA was the recipient of excess funds from the sale of SEAL - THE
HISTORY OF THE PARISH, published in 2007, and the events mentioned above. It
has distributed most of these funds to different parish organisations, but retains
a float of about £1,000 to meet set-up costs of any future village events.
There is a small committee comprising Chair - Barbara Martin, Secretary, Peter
Mountfield and Treasurer, David Williams. Peter, having moved from the village,
is retiring, and a replacement is needed. The duties are very light, setting
the agenda for meetings, taking minutes, and occasionally signing cheques. SVA
would also welcome further committee members, whose required contribution,
would be no more than a little time and some ideas.
Finally, two announcements from
Sevenoaks District Council via Seal Parish Council:-
1 - Sevenoaks District Council are
undertaking a survey of housing needs for local employees. If you are
interested in local housing, please complete the survey, to be found at https://surveymonkey.co.ok/localemployeesurvey.
This is particularly aimed at those working in the district, and how lack of
affordable housing affects them.
The results of this survey will be
fed into the Local Plan and future SDC housing policies, so make sure you have
your say.
2 - Sun May 13th - Knole Park
Sevenoaks - Run/Walk/Push Against Dementia' event.There are 3, 5 and 10k
courses, so something for most to tackle. For further information, please visit
www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/run/walk/push,
or call Sevenoaks Communities at SDC on 01732 227000.
Quite a lot to look forward to
already, but more to come I am sure!

Christmas update
Don't forget to bring yourselves and your families to
tomorrow's Christingle Service and Mini Christmas Fayre.
The service starts at 10am, with the traditional Church of
England Childrens' Society Christingles, followed by coffee or tea as
usual.
At 11,15 (ish), to about 1.30. the Mini Christmas Fayre will
be open, where there will be mulled wine, mince pies, Christmas gifts, a
Hand Made in Seal stall, a raffle of a Christmas hamper, beautiful wooden
gifts, cake and sweet stall, and maybe 🎅 could make an
appearance! The Seal Allotment Society and Seal Tiddlers will also have a
stall.
Hope to see you there! The Carol Service takes place next
Sunday - 17th December at 6.30pm, where wine and nibbles will be served after.
Before I finish, I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to JD
O'Brien and his team, who managed to get the Christmas lights up and
illuminating our village . We don't have a final figure yet, as some pledges of
donations have still not come in, but also, a massive thanks to all of you who
have contributed in any way - financially or otherwise, to this. It was great
to see so many people outside the village shops enjoying the mulled wine from
Birch's, and supporting our local businesses! It is hoped that there will
be a great SUMMER PARTY 🍹🍸🍺🍾🍭🍮🍰
for the whole village in 2018, so watch this space! As soon as all the
donations are in, we will be letting you all know exactly how much you have
raised!
In the meantime, for those that are unable to come along
tomorrow or next Sunday, have a very Happy, Peaceful Christmas and a Happy New
Year!
Marion. (on behalf of Know Your Neighbours).
